How I Start My Day

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” 

We’ve all heard this quote more times than we can count. 

The thought behind this quote is that your breakfast sets the tone for the rest of your day;

Nice healthy breakfast? Your day should follow.

This is a fine thought process, although there are other aspects to a morning routine that set the tone for the rest of your day. 

Here is a list of some of the morning practices that have successfully set me up for my day and can do the same for you!

Don’t Hit Snooze - By setting your alarm, you are committing yourself that you will get up at a certain time. No matter how tempting, hitting the snooze button on your alarm does nothing but allow your brain to think being lazy is okay. 

This is the first move you make when you wake up, so start your day by following through with your commitments!

Hydrate - We are supposed to drink a half-gallon of water a day. The best way to do this is to always have a water bottle on hand (preferably a reusable one). 

When I go to bed, I bring a water bottle with me to drink before getting out of bed every morning. I have found that this start to my day flushes out toxins and sets me on the right track to my half-gallon goal.

Don’t Reach For Your Phone - It might be our first instinct to reach for our phone as soon as we’re awake, however, I try to not touch my phone or computer for the first 30 minutes I’m awake each day.  Because I put my phone in “airplane mode” each night before going to bed, in the morning it is easy to let myself enjoy the first experiences of the day without the distractions on my phone. Since implementing this new rule, I feel as if I am living in the moment and making the decision to not share my morning with the rest of the world. 

Focus on Today - When you wake up, only focus on what needs to get done today. If you haven’t made a to-do list yet, make one now! Feel prepared enough to tackle today’s tasks. 

Make Your Bed - This is a small task that makes a big impact. 

Making your bed is a way you can give yourself a “check” on your to-do list before even leaving your room. It is an automatic small win. Don’t leave your room without doing it!

Meditate/Stretch - Take at least 10 minutes to yourself every morning to meditate and stretch. Doing this gets your head in the right mental space to take on the day and whatever it may bring. 

Get Some Natural Light - No, not the beer! 

Benefits of natural sunlight are mostly attributed but not limited to vitamin D. Sunlight also increases our serotonin levels which makes us overall happier people. So sit close to a window when checking your emails or drink your coffee on your front porch. 

Exercise - Getting your blood pumping is a great way to start your day. Something as simple as a short walk or as challenging as a couple of mile run can be beneficial to our overall health. Working out in the morning will give you energy, decrease your stress level, and put you in an overall better mood to start your day. 

Take the time to put these morning practices into action and see how it can affect the rest of your day!
